Tommy Chong and Pro-Cannabis Nurse Discuss Elderly Care, Dabbing and Addiction on New TNMNews Segment Sept. 30, 2014

PR Newswire

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Marijuana News (TNMNews) will premiere its third talk radio show on Internet radio station Live365 on September 30, 2014 as well as on the company's website at: www.TNMNews.com. TNMNews is the unbiased news source covering the political, economic, medicinal, and cultural issues surrounding the ever changing medicinal and recreational marijuana industry. This episode's featured guests include an interview with counterculture legend Tommy Chong by TNMNews national correspondent and expert grower Kyle Kushman, and a segment with registered nurse Mary Lynn Mathre, president of the American Cannabis Nurses Association.

Tommy Chong

The episode opens with internationally renowned marijuana cultivator and five-time Cannabis Cup Medal Winner Kyle Kushman interviewing celebrated actor, comedian, musician, and activist Tommy Chong. Chong and Kushman discuss marijuana addiction and dabbing—the process of pressing a piece of cannabis extract that contains up to 90 percent THC against a heated surface and inhaling the smoke. Chong says he equates dabbing to freebasing cannabis, but he also points out that if cannabis kills some forms of cancer, it might be a safe form of chemotherapy for some patients. Having stopped using cannabis for three years, he doesn't believe it is addictive or that anyone has ever overdosed on marijuana. He admits that he's smoked a lot of weed and believes he would have overdosed if it were possible.

Chong is a Grammy-Award-winning comedian who is legendary for his invaluable contribution to American counterculture as part of the iconic comedy duo Cheech and Chong. During their reign, the twosome recorded six gold comedy albums, including the 1973 Grammy winner Los Cochinos, and starred in eight films, most of which Chong co-wrote and directed. The first, Up In Smoke, was the highest-grossing comedy of 1978, topping $100 million at the box office. He is currently a contestant on the popular ABC television show Dancing with the Stars. During last night's episode, Tommy danced to a piece inspired by Scent of a Woman.

Chong recently launched Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams Relaxation Ice Cream, which is infused with hemp.

Mary Lynn Mathre, RN, MSN, CRN

In this episode, Mary Lynn Mathre describes the endocannabinoid system, an ancient health system found in all living creatures except insects, and discusses how cannabinoids found in cannabis interact with the human endocannabinoid system to safely and effectively treat a number of medical conditions. She highlights how marijuana is a neuroprotectant, so it is effective for treating epilepsy in both adults and children and post-traumatic stress in veterans returning from duty. She also believes it is ideal for treating the elderly, who can be resistant because of the stigma assigned to marijuana use. She acknowledges that most people don't believe cannabis works until they see it work on themselves or someone close to them.

Mary Lynn Mathre is president of the American Cannabis Nurses Association, a group of nurses working to expand awareness of the endocannabinoid system and integrate cannabinoid therapy into nursing practices. She is also co-founder of Patients Out of Time (POT), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to educating healthcare professionals and the public about the therapeutic use of cannabis.

Mathre's focus on medicinal cannabis started in 1985 with her graduate thesis on disclosure of marijuana use to healthcare professionals. Since then she has written cannabis resolutions for several organizations including the Virginia Nurses Association, the International Nurses Society on Addictions, and the American Public Health Association.
